You would be very surprised to learn how you can utilize the space you already have. You can take all that wasted basement space and turn it into a TV room, a bar room, a bedroom, or even a mini apartment for that kid that grew up but won’t move out yet,(or better yet, you’re mother-in-law!). The attic is always a good spot to look to see if you can reclaim some precious space. If you have a new baby coming home soon, it is a great idea to add a room or two up there. You can put the older siblings up there or use it for the playroom so your home isn’t strewn with toys. You can keep it a mess and not worry too much about your guests thinking you’re messy. Pop up a dormer to create a passage, a little creativity and some good old fashioned workmanship, and viola, more room on a decent budget! If we really put our brains in high gear, we can come up with creative ways to restructure our current living space to get the most from it. Rearranging closets, moving walls, adding openings and levels can all add to the useable space in our homes. Enclosing a porch is a great way to give you that much needed elbow room.

The basement can offer quite a bit. Usually it is cozy and out of the way, so it can be used as a sanctuary for a bit of privacy from guests. Whichever type of space you decide to create, you will need to consider a few things. First is escape passages in the event of emergencies, such as egress windows or bilco doors. Second is the height in correlation to what you want to do with the area. If it is to be a TV room, then most of the time you will be sitting or lying down. If it is going to be a bar room, you will probably need more height to stand comfortably. Basements tend to be more humid or even damp. You will need to accommodate for this by either waterproofing with paint or lifting the floor with a moisture barrier underneath. In some cases you may need a sump pump and a special closet to house it. If you choose to put a bathroom down there, you may have to dig through the foundation and install a mini septic tank with a pump. You may need to install heating and air conditioning as well, depending on what’s there already.

The attic can have some plusses and minuses. That all depends on how big it is and how you can get to it. Usually the roof needs to be raised in one or more spots to make headroom, like a dormer over a stairway or in a room where the existing slanted roof is too low. However, it does offer more daylight and a better view. It would also keep the personal areas, like bedrooms, up and away from guests, and offer better supervision of loved ones. The attic is more subject to the weather; therefore you would definitely need better insulation and temperature control.

The porch may be the best option to increase living space for the entire family. They are usually right off the living room and are somewhat boxed in already. All that would need to be done is close it in and insulate, add windows and doors where appropriate, then create open access to it.

All of these options are great for cutting down the budget, removing zoning obstacles, and shortening the build time. Permits can be a real hassle to get for additions. There are so many variables to consider. Consequently the process for an addition can take 8 months just for the approvals. Permits are much easier for remodeling the inside. Call us to discuss all the specific details and possibilities for your home. We’d love to show you!

Radiant Heat Flooring

One of the best ideas I’ve seen for heating a home comfortably and efficiently is Radiant Heat in flooring. Basically, radiant heat is installed under flooring as opposed to forced hot air or baseboard radiators, (or convective).

First, I like the feeling of being comfortable in all areas of my home, not just warm in some areas and cold in others. Usually, typical heating systems are warm near the heat source then cold near windows or at the end of the system. Radiant heat is evenly dispersed throughout the home so there are no noticeable differences in different spots. Also, I don’t need to keep my feet as warm as with convective. I can sit or play with the kids on the floor without worrying about being cold. I do love a good fireplace, but we typically don’t use them to heat our homes these days.

Second, and equally important, is the efficiency of the system.  Studies conducted by the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) indicate that with radiant heating systems people can be comfortable at temperatures 6°F to 8°F lower than with convective systems. Not only that, but take a look at the graphic. With radiant heat, the lower living area is where the heat is focused, whereas with convective, the air is heated and consequently it rises to the ceiling. In addition, convective heat is placed on outside walls. This temperature differential causes cold outside air to be drawn in. the bigger the difference between outside and inside temperature, the bigger the air infiltration. It then takes more energy to effectively heat the lower living area.

… As a result, the thermostat can be set 6°F to 8°F lower, and use less energy. It is estimated that each degree the temperature is lowered saves between 3% – 5% on energy costs. That equates to 18% – 40% savings.

Other benefits of radiant floor heat include maintaining the humidity level. It does not dry out the air as does convective. It is also easier to install, and can be increased in sections. So if you are adding an addition or redoing your whole heating system, it just works.

There are two kinds of Radiant Heat for flooring, electric or water. Electric is scrolled through a mesh which is then laid out under flooring in sections and wired accordingly. Water based is installed via flexible tubing that can be run under a new floor or even through joists under an existing floor. Water has three added benefits. First, it can be installed under existing flooring without having to rip it up. Second, it can be installed under any kind of flooring, whereas electric may have an issue under a rug. Third, it can be connected to a water heater or even a solar heating system.

In the end, radiant heat in your floor is better all around. Call us today to discuss the cost vs. savings you can realize by installing this very ‘green’ idea!

After coming into the general contractor’s arsenal as a material used in the construction of skate parks, Skatelite has seen considerable usage as a eco-friendly option for siding on both commercial and residential builds. Made of pressed paper and resin, Skatelite is durable enough to withstand the most vigorous skateboard session, heat resistant, and unaffected by paint thinners and other graffiti removal tools.

As a result of those properties, Skatelite has potential to become the next big thing in the world of alternative siding. For example architect and avid skater Paul Masi actually used the material to side his own home, as well as using it as his kitchen floor, countertops and facings for appliances. While working with The Discovery Channel on Construction Intervention, The Mazzei Group also used the technique to give Staten Island ultra-lounge Locale, it’s unique appeal.

If you’re interested in having Skatelite installed on your home or business please contact us.

Our friends over at smooth-on.com have an abundance of tips and how-to guides to aid in any small household renovation.

One of the simplest tips they offer is showing how using silicone putty on your old picture-frames can help restore them to their shining glory.

Essentially, you apply the putty to the area of the frame that requires restoration, then after 5-7 minutes, remove the putty mold.

Measure and mix-together the appropriate resin and metal powders, then fill a syringe with the mixture.

Release the mixture, via the syringe, into the mold, then wait for the resin to dry and proceed to demold it.

Finally, Highlight the resin with shoe polish and seal with clear acrylic spray before gluing the resin into it’s proper place on the frame.

Your antique frames should look as good as new in no time.

What Is Geothermal Energy?

by Vin on April 21, 2010

in Uncategorized

Last week, we here at The Mazzei Group wrote about how we were proud to have been chosen to help build Teri’s House, a home for Teri Russo, her children with Down syndrome, as well as a future home for future people with Down syndrome and mental illness to live.

The house will be heated by Geothermal energy.

Many people still do not fully understand what, exactly, Geothermal energy is, nor what it entails.

In it’s simplest form, Geothermal energy means the heat from the Earth. In this case, specifically the hot water found a few miles below the surface.

According to Geothermal Energy World:

“A geothermal heat pump system consists of a heat pump, an air delivery system (ductwork), and a heat exchanger-a system of pipes buried in the shallow ground near the building. In the winter, the heat pump removes heat from the heat exchanger and pumps it into the indoor air delivery system. In the summer, the process is reversed, and the heat pump moves heat from the indoor air into the heat exchanger. The heat removed from the indoor air during the summer can also be used to provide a free source of hot water.”

geothermal

Major Geothermal power plants of today make use of underground reservoirs for the generation of electricity in the more-Western American states. They use the steam from them to power generators, while others use the hot water to boil a working fluid that vaporizes and then turns a turbine to create electricity to power everything from homes and greenhouses to drying crops and pasteurizing milk.

Geothermal energy is a safe and environmentally-conscious alternative to traditional forms of big energy resources such a coal and nuclear power.

With the advent of Teri’s House, The Mazzei Group is proud to be utilizing this great and practical form of renewable energy.

Teri's House

Teri Russo has taken in four boys with Down syndrome and raised them, playing a significant role in their development.  Teri’s dream is to know her boys will always be okay and with their chronic health problems. They need a handicap accessible home that will also be energy efficient.

The Mazzei Group is proud to be a part of it as the General Contractor.

Through fundraising, generous donations of time and materials, this project will happen. According to the SI Advance: “Gianni Russo, Ms. Russo’s brother, who is the fundraising chairman, said that to date $300,000 has been raised for the $900,000 project.”

The house complies with all Americans with Disabilities Acts standards; with six bedrooms, an elevator and a generator. There is a large eat-in kitchen and a full basement. The house is designed to be as comfortable as possible for the boys, in hopes to keep Teri’s dream alive.

When she and her boys are gone it is designed to help more boys and keep the Down Syndrome Foundation alive. The house is going to be built to angle at every possible need, so in hopes the model can also be duplicated for other houses.

Teri’s House will also be using Geo-Thermal energy to heat and cool the home. Aside from being better for the environment, it is also a great money saver. Geo-Thermal energy goes 100 feet below the ground and uses the constant temperature of 50 degrees as a base to heat, and cool the home. It is energy efficient simply because of how much less it has to work to move the temperature. The outside temperature varies, but underground it stays constant.

As groundbreaking began, everyone involved in this project was very excited and waiting as the results manifest over the coming months.

The Mazzei Group is incredibly honored to be a part of something as important and generous as this home. This is a great experience for us from every standpoint. This is going to turn out to be a handicapped accessible, energy efficient home that will save her money, and help her be able to help her boys.

Bathroom Shower head remodel

Choosing the right shower head for your bathroom may seem at first like a fairly inconsequential decision. But, in actuality, it is a choice that you and your family will be actively living with for a long while, when you think about it.

As ezinearticles points out:

“Today there’s so much more to the bathroom than the shower, toilet, and basin with many homes now having complete shower rooms and wet rooms. The industry is a burgeoning one with plenty of options to choose from with personal preference is usually being the first criteria applied when shopping for the right shower head.”

First thing’s first, before even spending a dime on anything, make sure the shower head you are hoping to buy is compatible with your shower, as not all heads are. This is due to the varying water pressures needed for specific heads to function.

Today’s modern shower heads are capable of so much more than the old “standard” steady water spray. Many are equipped with adjustable dials that allow for light-to-heavy spray patterns for each discerning family-member’s liking.

Multi-function heads allow for the adjustment of pattern and flow due to a twist design. Double heads provide two robust sprays, and Rose heads allow for, as the gentle name implies, a soft, rain-like release of water from the head.

Fixed shower heads tend to cost more and cannot be moved for occasional redirecting of the water stream.

Hand-held heads tend to be cheaper, but aren’t usually as stylish as the fixed models.

As ezine puts it:

“While [the hand-held] choice isn’t as modern looking or as streamlined in appearance as the fixed option, it does offer great versatility as the shower head can quickly and easily be removed and used for cleaning or rinsing the inside of the shower, the family pet, or even an uncooperative child.”

Need more than just a shower head? Looking to redesign your bathroom? The Mazzei Group can help. Give us an e-mail at: http://mazzeigroup.com/contact/

Hagerty Job (33)

HardiePlank is an alternative to Vinyl & Wood siding. Out of the three most common sides of siding, Wood, Vinyl and HardiePlank, Vinyl is the least expensive and wood is the most expensive. Hardi Plank is a happy medium. The Mazzei group will proudly design your home or business exterior and install HardiePlank making it look fabulous for many years with little or no maintenance.

Here are some HardiePlank facts and comparisions:

  • HardiePlank is fire resistant unlike wood and vinyl which is combustible
  • HardiePlank is green, made from abundant materials to include sand cement and cellulose fibers and is warranted for 50 years.
  • HardiePlank is available in many colors or you can order it primed and paint it any color and it looks much like wood.
  • HardiePlank is as thick as wood. In comparison to thin Vinyl siding, HardiePlank is much more sturdy.
  • HardiePlank is insect resistant..
  • HardiePlank is cheaper than actual wood siding, but more expensive than vinyl.

If you are interested in purchasing and installing HardiePlank on your home or business, please contact The Mazzei Group at 347 723 1825 or email us at ettore@ mazzeigroup.com.

IPE Wood Decking

by Ettore on July 28, 2009

in Uncategorized

Steel Decks with IPE Wood decking are becoming popular in all neighborhoods in NYC.

On July 1st, 2008 the NYC fire department adopted a new fire code based on the model code of the International Fire Code (IFC). One of purposes of the new code is to protect neighboring houses from catching on fire when another is burning. When applying for a new permit to renovate the fire department in conjunction with the NYC Building Department is requiring sprinkler systems and non combustible materials for decks in some instances depending on the distance between neighboring houses.

IPE hardwood also known as Ironwood is naturally resistant to fire, moisture, insects and can be used in ground contact without preservatives or additional treatments. It is rated in the same class as steel and concrete.

The initial capital investment will be greater to build with steel and IPE wood and in the long run your cost per year will decrease given that you will probably never have to replace the deck or decking.
